Description:

“As a queer Black artist representation has been a word that has surrounded my practice and in some ways defined it. With this series I wanted to pay homage to past artists whose existence allowed for me to see myself. To some the themes I explore are controversial and to others they can be liberating, it’s where these opposing sides meet that I find true solace. To be given the chance to showcase this series at the renowned gallery Somerset House, as part of the Get Up, Stand Up Now exhibition curated by Zak Ove, filled me with joy as my documentation of ideas were able to reach audiences and provoke questions and start discussions.”

– Campbell Addy

Engender explores the transition of liberation from past Black LGBTQI+ artists to the current generation. In a series of stylised portraits, Addy reflects back onto the image a character that gives rise to questions and/or answers surrounding the life of queer artists of colour.

Engender pays homage to artists of the past who paved the way for certain types of work to be viewed in galleries and mainstream media. The work examines key ideas in photography, such as family, gender identity, Black identity and sexuality.
